5 Tips For Securing Your Social Media Accounts

It’s no secret that scammers and hackers get smarter and smarter by the day. They find all sorts of ways to steal people’s information, hack their social media accounts and generally cause chaos for the people they target. So how can you protect your social media accounts from being hacked?

Many sites, apps and platforms will now require you to choose a password that meets a minimum requirement. The reason for this is that it’s estimated over 80% of cyber attacks occur as a result of a stolen or weak password. So how to create a strong password?

  • Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Include numbers, symbols and if permitted spaces too
  • The longer the better - use at least 8 characters

2. Change Your Password Regularly
This might sound like a bit of a pain but did you know that anywhere up to 50% of social media users have not changed their passwords in over a year? You should also change your passwords as soon as you have any indication of suspicious activity, including attempted login notifications.

3. Use Two Factor Authentication
If you’re not sure what this is, it’s basically where you set up your security settings to only allow new logins to your account once a code has been entered. This code is normally sent to your phone as an SMS or your designated email address. Without this code, no one can login to your account from a new device.

4. Think Before You Click!
If you get a strange email or message with a link in it from someone you don’t know. DO. NOT. CLICK. IT. Even if it sounds interesting or exciting. The same goes for strange messages from people you do know. Hackers can get into people’s accounts and send messages to their contacts that contain links with viruses in them.

So if the way the message is worded seems off or the content is not something you would normally expect to receive from that person, contact them immediately and let them know you think they may have had their account compromised..

5. Check Your Apps
Many apps will ask for access to your social media accounts as part of the setup and most of these are harmless. However you should check these regularly and remove permissions for any apps you are no longer using. Always be careful about giving apps access to your accounts and if it’s not necessary as part of using the app, we recommend not giving them access.

If you're using LinkedIn for your business, having a fully optimised Company Page is vital, but how do you do this?

According to LinkedIn, completed Company Pages get 30% more weekly views. Here's what you'll need to do to have a completed and optimised page:
  1. Add your logo and a cover image to your page. The ideal dimensions for your cover image are 1128 x 191 pixels and your logo is 300 x 300 pixels.
  2. Make sure your Overview clearly defines your business and contains relevant terms, phrases, and keywords your target market would search for.
  3. Provide as much company information as possible including your website, location, industry, and company size.
  4. Choose a call-to-action button that aligns with your goals e.g. if you want to drive traffic to your website, choose "View Website".

​Achieving success on LinkedIn as a business also requires you to show up and be part of the conversations people are having. That means commenting on relevant articles and posts, sharing content that your target market is interested in and leveraging things like hashtags and mentions.


You'll also want to familiarise yourself with the LinkedIn mobile app. Even though it has some restrictions, you can still manage the majority of your LinkedIn activity from the app and it will allow you to respond quickly to comments or messages.

Tip #002 Increase Facebook Followers From Post Likes

Building a Facebook following is challenging for most business owners and many rarely reach the thousand or so page followers needed to build organic momentum. Exploiting your customer touch-points begging them to follow your page at every opportunity is often the only strategy business owners use and whilst this has its value, it only reaches those who are buying your goods and services.

It is important to look beyond the people presently in your reach and build an audience of prospects or people who know people in your target market and may potentially recommend you.

​Here is just one strategy within Facebook that enables you to broaden your following. 

From time to time a Facebook user who is not a follower of your page may like or react to your post. Often this occurs because a follower has shared your post enabling it to be displayed in the news feeds of their friends.
This presents an opportunity for you to grow your page audience by inviting them to follow your page.

You can monitor the reactions to your post from your business page by clicking on the reactions icon. This will open a popup showing those who have liked or reacted to the post and those that have liked your page.  From here you can invite  non-followers by clicking on the invite button.

This is an under-utilised strategy that you can implement immediately with absolutely no cost to grow your Facebook page following.

P.S. It can also be useful to acknowledge those who engage with your posts by thanking them or replying to their comments.

Organic reach on social media is becoming harder and harder for business owners to achieve as social media platforms prioritise content from direct personal connections in news feeds and push businesses into the paid advertising space.These platforms after all are only free for users because they build enormous data sets which they monetise through targeted advertising which can be advantageous to business owners using the pay to play space.

For those without unlimited budgets, organic social media posting does still have an impact and being effective means sharing original content that users find interesting. Now in spite of the amazing developments in AI, platform algorithms rely on signals such as engagement to decide if content is interesting and sharing your own content can get the ball rolling.

When your business shares a post it creates the opportunity for the post to be seen by followers of the page. Actual reach is determined by the platforms algorithm which considers a followers location, interests, previous engagement with the page and a number of other things.
