One of the best things you can do for you business is ensure that everything you do, both from an interaction standpoint and your products and services, aligns with your values. This alignment not only means that what you're doing is something you resonate with but it also makes decision making, product development and business strategy that much easier. One of the first questions you will be asking yourself is "Does this align with my values?" and if the answer is no, the the decision is a no. How simple is that!? So how integrate values into your business?
Many business owners know what they stand for and what they believe in, as it is generally the reason behind them starting their businesses, but articulating this to their clients, prospects or team is not as easy. If you have a team, you need to make sure each one of the understands and represents those values fully. Have you ever worked with someone and you just couldn't figure out why you didn't get along with them? Chances are it was a difference in values because this will mean what is important to them is not what is important you.
One thing you can do is publish your values on your website. Make them a part of your Home or About Us page and just give a brief insight into what each value means to your business and ultimately you. You may even choose to have these printed up and displayed in your office, reception and/or break room. These constant reminders help to encourage the embodiment of the values but also helps to hold you and others accountable to actions that don't align with them.
If you're not sure what your values are, or more so you don't know how to put them in to words, sit down with your team or your business partner/s and talk about what it is you value in the business. What is it you do that's different and is there a reason you chose to do it differently? You'll find that reason is more than likely one or more of your values.
At Emanation, we have constant reminders around us of our values. We have the posters, we have them on our website and even some of our promotional material but most of all our business is the constant reminder. Emanation was founded because we wanted to help small business owners succeed, thrive and enjoy owning their businesses again. Let's face it, business ownership is not always the picnic we want it to be but the challenges and opportunities we face make the victories and achievements that much sweeter.
