In the corporate, and now even the blue collar worlds, the term “work/life balance” is thrown around A LOT. Basically what this means is that employees want to feel like their entire lives do not revolve around their job or career and that they have the time and/or flexibility to meet family and social obligations. This is a very powerful tool for motivating and retaining team members but the reality is, as an entrepreneur, this balance doesn’t really exist because you are usually “on” the majority of the time.
Now this isn’t bad thing and it doesn’t make you a workaholic but it does mean you need to find a new way to achieve something like a work/life balance an employee could. The idea of owning and running your own business is that sense of control and freedom but with this comes a cost of responsibility. It’s not a case of calling in sick for a personal day and someone else takes over for you because often times there is no one else, but it is about working smarter to allow yourself the time to take personal days.
The hardest thing for a business owner is usually the idea of handing over the reigns to someone else, even if only for a few days or weeks, so that they can take a step back or go on holiday. The truth of the matter is no one is ever going to run the show like you do because they aren’t you, but you can systemise and automate aspects of your business to ensure consistency in key areas and allow others to manage things in your absence. Training is key and if you’re clear in your expectations and this translates to your systems and processes, this can be relatively pain free.
Ask yourself why you got into business in the first place and it’s unlikely you will say “So that I could work twice as long as all my friends in jobs, never have a holiday and have stress levels measured on a Richter Scale.” You want to enjoy the fruits of your labor, not be too tired or too busy to even realise what they are. The balance for you is more about leveraging your time and your business to give you the lifestyle you want and not chasing some elusive concept that just won’t work for you. It’s time to start reaping the rewards that come with business ownership and the entrepreneurial spirit!
