When you consider how much our parents spent on our education as children and how much some of us spend on it as university or TAFE students, doesn’t it seem strange to stop completely once “school” is done? Why do we seem to think that in the space of a few years, we have learned everything we need to know about our professions and that anything else can be learned by experience?
I’m gonna say it. Experience is a lousy teacher. Yeah sure the lessons we learn are harder to forget but wouldn’t it have been better to have not made the mistakes in the first place? Especially if you’re able to learn how to avoid them. We all make mistakes and in business, mistakes are definitely what help us learn and grow, but some mistakes just aren’t worth making.
At Emanation, our entire business is based on helping others achieve their goals and dreams through business ownership and we bring every dollar of our investment into our education to the table. Our courses and seminars are all developed around hours of training, testing and experience because we want to make sure we bring our A game to our clients and nothing less.
Learning from those who have gone before us is a long standing tradition of the human race. From cavemen passing down hunting techniques to professors in lecture halls sharing their expertise in quantum mechanics, we learn what learn from the experience of others. This is why we seek out the most qualified and most experienced teachers/mentors when we are looking at our development.
Having a mentor or coach is all about shared experiences and learning from someone who has been down the same path you are heading down. They know the pitfalls and the traps and can help you to anticipate them better than they may have. If they are a good mentor, they won’t have learned everything from books and classes but through hands on experience and yeah, making a few mistakes.
